When your software needs Windows

Plenty of software only runs on Windows, or runs best there: .NET applications, tools that need a desktop, and programs you'd normally leave running on a PC under your desk. A Windows VPS gives them a home that stays online, with a proper network connection and hardware that isn't shared with your everyday browsing.

Choose Windows Server as your operating system when you order and you get the same VPS as our Linux customers: dedicated Ryzen cores, DDR4 memory, NVMe storage and always-on DDoS protection. You get full Administrator access, console access through the panel, and you can reinstall whenever you need a clean slate.

01

How much memory does Windows need?

Windows Server with a desktop uses more memory than a minimal Linux install before your own software even starts, so it's worth giving it more room than you would a Linux box doing the same job.

  • 4 GB, 2 cores: a light Windows workload, such as a single small app or a remote desktop for occasional admin.
  • 8 GB, 4 cores: our recommended all-rounder, and a comfortable place to start for most Windows projects.
  • 12 GB and up: busier applications, databases or several services on one server.

The 2 GB plan is better suited to Linux. You can scale RAM, CPU and storage up later, usually with a quick reboot.

02

Connecting with Remote Desktop

Once your server is ready, its IP address and login details appear in your client area. On Windows, open Remote Desktop Connection, enter the IP, and sign in as Administrator. On macOS, Linux, iOS or Android, use any Remote Desktop (RDP) client.

If you ever lock yourself out, for example after a firewall change, the console in the panel still gets you onto the server so you can put things right.

03

Keeping a Windows server secure

Our VPS plans are unmanaged, so the server's day-to-day upkeep is yours. A few habits go a long way on a Windows machine that's reachable from the internet:

  • Use a long, unique Administrator password, and change the one you were issued.
  • Keep Windows Update on and restart for updates regularly.
  • Use Windows Firewall to limit which ports are open, and restrict Remote Desktop to your own IP where you can.
  • Keep your own backups of anything you can't afford to lose.

Always-on DDoS protection sits in front of every VPS, and our team is on live chat and Discord 24/7 if you need a hand. Our guide to managed vs unmanaged hosting explains where the line sits.

Salt Lake City or Newcastle?

Put your Windows VPS close to the people who use it. Salt Lake City serves North America, and Newcastle serves the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. The plans and prices are the same in both, so the choice is purely about who's connecting.
