ESX has been around for years, and that shows in the sheer number of community jobs, shops and systems written for it. Today most new ESX servers start on ESX Legacy, the maintained version of the framework.

Setting up ESX Legacy

The quickest route is txAdmin's ESX Legacy recipe. It pulls down the framework, creates its database tables and writes a working server.cfg for you.

  1. 1Get a free server licence key from the Cfx.re portal.
  2. 2Create a MySQL database from the Databases tab in our game panel and keep the details handy.
  3. 3Start your server, open txAdmin from the address in the console, and log in with the one-time PIN.
  4. 4Choose Popular Recipes, select ESX Legacy and enter your licence key and database details.
  5. 5When the recipe finishes, start the server from txAdmin and join to check everything loads.

Prefer to bring your own ESX build? Choose a blank or local server data option in txAdmin instead and upload your files over SFTP.

Older ESX scripts and compatibility

Because ESX has such a long history, you'll find scripts written for older versions alongside ones made for ESX Legacy. Older scripts sometimes expect functions or database columns that have since changed, so read each resource's requirements before you add it, and test new scripts on a quiet server or a backup copy first.

When something doesn't load, the txAdmin live console is the first place to look. It usually names the resource and the line that failed. Our support team knows FiveM well and is happy to take a look if you get stuck.

Choosing the right size for ESX

Memory use grows with your resource list rather than with ESX itself. As a rough guide from our plan line-up:

  • 2 GB Starter: a new community setting up its ESX base and testing scripts.
  • 4 GB Roleplay: an active ESX server with a full set of jobs.
  • 6 GB City: our recommended plan for a busy city, with room for custom maps and vehicles.
  • 8 GB and above: established servers with large resource lists and busy evenings.

FiveM relies on single-thread speed, which is why every size runs on high-clock Ryzen CPUs.

Keeping your ESX data safe

ESX keeps users, jobs, owned vehicles and inventories in MySQL, so your database is your server. Take a backup before updating ESX or adding a script that changes tables, and keep a copy of your server.cfg and resources too.
