Managed vs unmanaged hosting

3 min read

When you order a VPS or server, you will often see managed and unmanaged options. The difference is simply who looks after the server.

Unmanaged

You get the raw server with full root access, and everything above the hardware is yours to run: operating system, updates, security, web server, backups and troubleshooting. It is the most flexible and the best value, and it is the right choice if you are comfortable on the command line.

Managed

We handle the heavy lifting: setup, security patching, monitoring, updates and support when something breaks. You still get to use the server, but you do not have to be a sysadmin. Choose this if you want the power of a VPS or dedicated server without the maintenance.

Which should I pick?

  • Comfortable with Linux and want full control, or the lowest price: unmanaged.
  • Want to focus on your project, not the server: managed.
  • Not sure: start unmanaged and add management later, or ask our team.

You can move between the two at any time, so you are never locked in.
