Unmanaged
You get the raw server with full root access, and everything above the hardware is yours to run: operating system, updates, security, web server, backups and troubleshooting. It is the most flexible and the best value, and it is the right choice if you are comfortable on the command line. Our VPS and dedicated servers work this way.
Managed
The host handles the server admin for you: setup, security patching, monitoring and updates. You still use the server, but you do not have to be a sysadmin. Our web hosting works a lot like this, because we look after the servers underneath cPanel and DirectAdmin, and our game servers come ready to go in our game panel.
