How to set up an Astroneer server

Set up your Astroneer dedicated server: AstroServerSettings.ini, the owner and player list, uploading an existing save and connecting with friends.

An Astroneer dedicated server keeps your shared solar system running, so friends can drop in and keep building whenever they like. Your Astroneer server is created with the game installed. This guide covers the settings file, managing players, bringing over a save and connecting.

How much RAM does an Astroneer server need?

  • 4 GB: our recommended size, fine for most groups.
  • 6 to 8 GB: big, heavily built saves with lots of automation.

Astroneer dedicated servers allow up to 8 players at once.

1. AstroServerSettings.ini

Most settings live in Astro/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/AstroServerSettings.ini. Stop the server before editing. Useful settings include:

  • ServerName: your server's name.
  • ServerPassword: a password friends need to join.
  • OwnerName: your in-game name. The player who joins with this name becomes the server owner.
  • PublicIP: your server's public IP address, which must match the IP shown at the top of our game panel.
  • AutoSaveGameInterval: how often, in seconds, the game saves.
  • DenyUnlistedPlayers: set to True to only let in players on the server's player list.
  • ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName: the save the server loads.

The port is set separately in Engine.ini, in the same folder. Leave it as it is, since it has to match the port given to your server in our game panel.

2. Managing players

Once you join as the owner, you can manage the server from inside the game: see who is online, kick or ban players, give people admin rights and set who is allowed in.

3. Uploading an existing save

  1. On your PC, find your save files. For the Steam version they are in your user folder under AppData, then Local, Astro, Saved and SaveGames.
  2. Stop the server and take a backup from the panel.
  3. Upload the .savegame file into Astro/Saved/SaveGames on the server.
  4. Set ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName to the save's name, which is the part of the file name before the dollar sign.
  5. Start the server.

Connecting with friends

In Astroneer, open the dedicated server list from the main menu, add a server with your IP and port in the form IP:port, and enter the password if you set one. Everyone needs to be on the same game version as the server.

Troubleshooting

  • Friends cannot connect: check PublicIP matches the IP in our game panel, and that everyone is on the latest game version.
  • Wrong save loaded: check ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName matches your save's name exactly.
  • Settings not applying: edit the files while the server is stopped.
  • No owner controls: OwnerName must match your in-game name exactly.

Astroneer's server can be fussy about network settings, so if you are still stuck, ask us on live chat or Discord and we will take a look.
