Assetto Corsa's server is light and flexible, from a quiet practice lobby to a full race night. Your Assetto Corsa server is created with the server software installed. This guide covers the two config files, cars and tracks, sessions, admin commands and getting drivers in.
How much RAM does an Assetto Corsa server need?
- 2 GB: our recommended size, plenty for most lobbies.
- 4 to 6 GB: big grids, larger custom tracks and server plugins.
The easy way: Content Manager
Most people set up their server with Content Manager, the popular launcher for Assetto Corsa. Its server section lets you pick the track, cars, sessions and rules with a proper interface, then pack everything the server needs into a folder. Upload the packed files with SFTP or the file manager, keep the port settings that match our game panel, and start the server.
1. server_cfg.ini
If you would rather edit by hand, the main settings live in cfg/server_cfg.ini, in the [SERVER] section. Stop the server before editing.
- NAME: your server's name in the lobby.
- TRACK and CONFIG_TRACK: the track's folder name and, for tracks with several layouts, the layout.
- CARS: the folder names of the cars allowed, separated by semicolons.
- MAX_CLIENTS: how many drivers can join. It cannot be more than the track's pit boxes.
- PASSWORD: a password to join. Leave it empty for a public server.
- ADMIN_PASSWORD: the password for admin commands in game.
- REGISTER_TO_LOBBY: set to 1 to show in the public server list.
Sessions have their own sections, such as [PRACTICE], [QUALIFY] and [RACE], each with a time or lap count. Leave the port settings as they are, since they need to match the ports in our game panel.
2. entry_list.ini
cfg/entry_list.ini lists every slot on the grid, one block per car, starting at [CAR_0]. Each block sets a MODEL, which must be one of the cars in your CARS list, and a SKIN. Make sure there are as many entries as MAX_CLIENTS.
3. Cars and tracks
The server needs data for every car and track you use, in its content/cars and content/tracks folders. For mod cars and tracks, Content Manager's pack option creates the server data for you. Every driver also needs the same cars and tracks installed in their own game, so share download links with your community.
4. Admin commands
Join your server, open chat and type /admin followed by your admin password. You can then use commands such as /next_session, /restart_session, /kick and /ban, followed by a driver's name where needed.
Inviting drivers
If REGISTER_TO_LOBBY is on, drivers can find your server in the online list in Content Manager or the game's own launcher. In Content Manager they can also add it directly using your server's address from our game panel.
Troubleshooting
- Server will not start: usually a car or track in the config that is missing from the content folder, or a typo in a folder name. The console names it.
- Drivers get a checksum error: their copy of a car or track does not match the server's. Everyone needs the same version.
- Fewer slots than expected: MAX_CLIENTS is limited by the track's pit boxes and the entries in entry_list.ini.
- Not in the lobby: check REGISTER_TO_LOBBY is set to 1, then restart.
