Arma Reforger servers are set up through a single config file, which makes them easy to back up and share. Your Arma Reforger server is created with the game installed. This guide covers the config file, scenarios, admins, mods and crossplay.
How much RAM does an Arma Reforger server need?
- 6 GB: our smallest Reforger size, for small groups and lighter scenarios.
- 8 GB: our recommended size for a community Conflict or Game Master server.
- 12 to 16 GB: busy servers with lots of players, AI and mods.
1. The config file
Reforger reads its settings from a JSON config file, usually config.json in the server's main folder. Stop the server before editing it in the file manager. JSON is strict about commas, quote marks and brackets, so a free online JSON validator is handy for checking the file before you save.
The main settings sit in the game section:
- name: your server's name in the browser.
- password: a password players need to join. Leave it empty for a public server.
- passwordAdmin: the password for logging in as admin in game.
- maxPlayers: how many players can join.
- scenarioId: the mission the server runs.
- visible: whether the server shows in the server browser.
- crossPlatform: set to true to let console players join. See the crossplay section below.
Leave the port and address settings as they are, since they have to match the ports given to your server in our game panel.
2. Choosing a scenario
Each scenario has an ID made of a code in curly brackets followed by a path. Conflict on Everon, for example, is {ECC61978EDCC2B5A}Missions/23_Campaign.conf. Bohemia Interactive's server documentation lists the official scenarios, and Workshop mods that add scenarios list their own IDs. Copy the full ID into scenarioId exactly as written.
3. Admins
With passwordAdmin set, join your server, open chat and type #login followed by your admin password. You can then use admin commands in chat, such as #kick. You can also list trusted players in the admins section of the config file, so they have admin rights without needing the password.
4. Mods
Reforger mods come from the Arma Reforger Workshop rather than Steam. Find a mod on the Workshop website, copy its mod ID, and add an entry for it to the mods list in your config file with its modId and name. The server downloads mods when it starts, and players download them automatically when they join.
Some mods depend on others, so add those too. If a mod adds its own scenario, change scenarioId to match. Take a backup of your config file before big changes.
Crossplay
Reforger supports crossplay with Xbox and PlayStation players. To allow it, set crossPlatform to true. Console players can only join with mods that are available on their platform, so check your mod list if they cannot connect.
Inviting players
Players find your server in the in-game server browser by searching for its name. They can also join directly with your server's IP and port, shown at the top of our game panel.
Troubleshooting
- Server will not start after an edit: the config file probably has a JSON mistake, such as a missing comma. Check it with a validator.
- Server not in the browser: check visible is true, and give it a few minutes.
- Mods failing to download: check each modId, and that the mod is still published.
- Console players cannot join: check crossPlatform is on and that every mod supports their platform.
