Hosting Valheim

A dedicated Valheim server means your world doesn't disappear when the host logs off. Everyone joins the same always-on world, and the world is saved on the server instead of on one player's PC.

Valheim's server is light. 4 GB is plenty for a vanilla world and a full group, and that's what the builder suggests. Step up to 6 or 8 GB for a heavily explored world or a modded server, and further if you run big mod packs.

01

Players and settings

Valheim allows up to 10 players on a server by default. Set your server name, world name and password in the startup settings: the password needs to be at least 5 characters and can't appear in the server name. Valheim also supports crossplay with the Xbox and Microsoft Store versions, which is turned on with a launch option. Ask us if you need a hand with it.

02

Bringing your world

Already have a world from playing co-op? Upload its .db and .fwl files to the server's worlds folder with the file manager or SFTP, set the world name to match, and start the server. Your builds, portals and map exploration come with it. Daily backups keep a copy of the world off the game's own save slots too.

03

Mods

Valheim mods run on BepInEx. Install it into the server files, then add plugins like Valheim Plus or server-side quality-of-life mods into its plugins folder. Most gameplay mods need players to install the same mods on their side, so share your list with your group. Mods that raise the 10-player limit are popular for bigger communities.

04

Hardware and location

Premium Ryzen hardware handles big bases with lots of pieces well, where the server has more to track. Budget Xeon is fine for a small group. Choose Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, or Newcastle for the UK and Europe.

Up to 10 players by default, which is Valheim's own limit. Some mods raise it, but every player then needs the same mods.

4 GB covers a vanilla server with a full group. Go for 6 to 8 GB if your world is heavily explored or you run mods.

Yes. Upload your world's .db and .fwl files with the file manager or SFTP and set the world name in the startup settings to match.

Yes. Install BepInEx into the server files, then add mods to its plugins folder. Most mods need players to install them too.

Valheim needs the server password to be at least 5 characters long, and it can't appear in the server name.

Budget runs on Intel Xeon servers with DDR4 memory and SSD storage, and is great value for smaller servers and friends. Premium runs on AMD Ryzen 7950X servers with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage: much faster per core, which busy or heavily modded servers notice most.

Premium servers are set up automatically: once your payment goes through, your server is created and you can log in to the game panel straight away. Budget hardware and our Dallas location are on pre-order, so those servers are set up as soon as they launch.

Pick the one closest to most of your players: Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, Newcastle for the UK and Europe. Distance adds lag that no amount of hardware can remove.
