Hosting Squad

Squad is built for large-scale battles with up to 100 players, and its server needs memory to match. The builder suggests 8 GB, which suits most community servers.

A small training server for your clan can run on 6 GB, and full 100-player servers running modded layers are happier on 12 to 16 GB. A fast CPU helps keep the server steady when both teams are fighting over the same objective.

01

Server configuration

Squad's settings live in a set of cfg files you can edit in the file manager. Server.cfg holds the server name, max players and team balance rules. Admins.cfg sets your admin groups and permissions, and LayerRotation.cfg or LevelRotation.cfg decide which layers come up next. MOTD.cfg holds the message players see when they join.

02

Licensing

Offworld Industries runs a licensing programme for Squad servers. Unlicensed servers can run, but they're shown separately in the server browser and can't use some features. If you want a licensed server for your community, you apply to Offworld directly, and our team can help you meet their requirements.

03

Mods

Squad has Steam Workshop mods that add maps, factions and gameplay changes. Download the mods to your server, add the modded layers to your rotation, and players pick up the mods when they join. Big mods add to memory use, so leave some headroom.

04

Hardware and location

Premium Ryzen 7950X hardware gives the steady performance that full servers need. Choose Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, or Newcastle for the UK and Europe.

Getting started

Once your server is set up, set a name in Server.cfg, add yourself to Admins.cfg and choose your layer rotation, then restart. Your server appears in the in-game server browser. Many communities also run a management tool alongside Squad for bans, seeding messages and logs, connected through RCON.

“After being with simplistic node for just over 6 months, they offer some of the best web hosting I've seen. Cheap, easy and quick to set up and use. Best game hosting i've used again it's cheap for it price, quick and easy to navigate.…”

Around 8 GB for most servers. A small training server can use 6 GB, and full 100-player modded servers do better on 12 to 16 GB.

No. Unlicensed servers can run, but they're listed separately. If you want a licensed server, you apply to Offworld Industries directly.

Add your admin groups and players' Steam IDs to Admins.cfg in the file manager, then restart.

Yes. Edit LayerRotation.cfg or LevelRotation.cfg to choose which layers come up and in what order.

Budget runs on Intel Xeon servers with DDR4 memory and SSD storage, and is great value for smaller servers and friends. Premium runs on AMD Ryzen 7950X servers with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage: much faster per core, which busy or heavily modded servers notice most.

Premium servers are set up automatically: once your payment goes through, your server is created and you can log in to the game panel straight away. Budget hardware and our Dallas location are on pre-order, so those servers are set up as soon as they launch.

Pick the one closest to most of your players: Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, Newcastle for the UK and Europe. Distance adds lag that no amount of hardware can remove.
