Hosting SCP: Secret Laboratory

SCP: Secret Laboratory servers are fairly light. 2 GB runs a small server, and the builder suggests 4 GB, which gives room for plugins and a healthy player count. Large community servers with a long plugin list can use 6 to 8 GB.

The server is fast-paced and every player is close together in the facility, so ping matters. Pick the location closest to your players: Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, or Newcastle for the UK and Europe.

01

Configuration

The server's settings are split across config files you can edit in the file manager. config_gameplay.txt covers the server name, max players, round settings, spawn rules and friendly fire. config_remoteadmin.txt sets up your staff roles and permissions for the Remote Admin panel. Changes take effect after a restart.

02

Plugins

Custom roles, items and game modes come from plugin frameworks such as EXILED or Northwood's own LabAPI. Upload the framework and its plugins with the file manager or SFTP. You have full file access, so you can run whichever plugins your community wants. Check each plugin supports your game version, as big SCP: SL updates often need plugins to catch up.

03

Getting verified

To appear in the public server list, Northwood asks server owners to have their server verified and to follow their server hosting rules. The process is done by email with Northwood, and our team can help with any details they ask about your server. Unverified servers can still be joined directly by IP, which is fine for private groups.

04

Getting started

Once your server is set up, set a name and max players in config_gameplay.txt and restart. Players can find you in the in-game server list once you're verified, or join directly by address before then. Premium Ryzen hardware keeps rounds smooth when lots of players and plugins are active, and Budget Xeon suits a small server for friends.

2 GB for a small server and 4 GB for most servers with plugins. Big community servers with many plugins can use 6 to 8 GB.

Yes. Upload a framework such as EXILED or LabAPI and your plugins with the file manager or SFTP.

Northwood requires servers to be verified before they're listed publicly. Until then, players can join directly by IP.

Set up roles and permissions in config_remoteadmin.txt, then add your staff members' IDs to their roles.

Budget runs on Intel Xeon servers with DDR4 memory and SSD storage, and is great value for smaller servers and friends. Premium runs on AMD Ryzen 7950X servers with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage: much faster per core, which busy or heavily modded servers notice most.

Premium servers are set up automatically: once your payment goes through, your server is created and you can log in to the game panel straight away. Budget hardware and our Dallas location are on pre-order, so those servers are set up as soon as they launch.

Pick the one closest to most of your players: Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, Newcastle for the UK and Europe. Distance adds lag that no amount of hardware can remove.
