Hosting Minecraft

A Minecraft Java server is mostly limited by memory and single-core speed. The world itself runs on one main thread, so a fast CPU keeps ticks steady at 20 TPS, and memory decides how many players, plugins and mods you can load before things slow down.

Tell the builder what you want to run and it suggests a size. Vanilla is happy on around 4 GB, a Paper server with a handful of plugins on 6 GB, a light Fabric setup on 8 GB, and a big Forge or NeoForge modpack on 12 GB or more. We don't cap player slots, so memory is the only real limit.

01

Plugins, mods and modpacks

Pick Vanilla, Plugins (Paper, Purpur or Spigot), Light mods (Fabric) or Big modpack (Forge or NeoForge) and your server is installed with the right software. Add plugins and mods by dropping the .jar files into the plugins or mods folder with the file manager or SFTP. For a modpack, search Modrinth from the panel and install it in one click, or upload a pack's server files (from CurseForge, say) and start it up. If you want Bedrock players on a Java server, the Geyser plugin on Paper is the usual way to do it.

02

Running your world

The game panel gives you a live console for commands, a file manager for server.properties, whitelists and ops, and SFTP for bigger uploads. You can upload an existing world folder to carry on where you left off. Daily backups run on every server, and you can take your own before a big update or a new plugin.

03

Choosing hardware

Premium runs on Ryzen 7950X with DDR5 and NVMe, and its high clock speed is what busy or heavily modded servers notice most, especially when lots of chunks are being generated. Budget Xeon hardware suits a small vanilla or lightly modded world for friends. Choose Salt Lake City or Dallas for North American players, or Newcastle for the UK and Europe.

04

Performance tips

If your server starts to lag, the usual causes are a high view distance, too many entities and new chunks being generated. Lowering view-distance in server.properties and pre-generating your world with a plugin like Chunky makes a big difference. Spark is a handy plugin for finding out what's using your server's time.

Around 4 GB for vanilla, 6 GB for a Paper server with plugins, 8 GB for light Fabric mods and 12 GB or more for big Forge or NeoForge modpacks. Large player counts and view distances push that up, and you can upgrade any time.

Java Edition. Bedrock players can still join a Paper server if you install the Geyser plugin.

We don't cap player slots. How many people play smoothly depends on your memory, your plugins and mods, and settings like view distance.

Yes. Upload a world folder or a modpack's server files with the file manager or SFTP, then start the server.

Yes. You can change the game version in your server's startup settings, and if you want to move between vanilla, Paper, Fabric or Forge, our team can switch it for you. Take a backup first, as mods and plugins don't carry across.

Budget runs on Intel Xeon servers with DDR4 memory and SSD storage, and is great value for smaller servers and friends. Premium runs on AMD Ryzen 7950X servers with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage: much faster per core, which busy or heavily modded servers notice most.

Premium servers are set up automatically: once your payment goes through, your server is created and you can log in to the game panel straight away. Budget hardware and our Dallas location are on pre-order, so those servers are set up as soon as they launch.

Pick the one closest to most of your players: Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, Newcastle for the UK and Europe. Distance adds lag that no amount of hardware can remove.
