Hosting Garry's Mod

Garry's Mod is a sandbox for gamemodes, so what your server needs depends on what you run. A Sandbox or TTT server for friends runs fine on 2 GB, and the builder suggests 4 GB for most servers with a set of addons.

DarkRP and other roleplay servers with lots of addons, custom models and big maps use more, and 8 to 12 GB gives them room. Garry's Mod also leans heavily on a single CPU core, so faster hardware means smoother physics and fewer lag spikes.

01

Gamemodes and maps

Set the gamemode and starting map in your startup settings. Sandbox and Trouble in Terrorist Town come with the game, while DarkRP, Prop Hunt, Murder and others are added as addons. Change map in-game from the console or with an admin mod.

02

Workshop collections

The usual way to add content is a Steam Workshop collection. Set your collection ID in the startup settings, and the server downloads every addon in it. Players get the same content when they join, so keep the collection tidy to speed up loading.

03

Addons and Lua

You can also upload addons and Lua scripts straight into garrysmod/addons with the file manager or SFTP. That's how most paid scripts, admin mods like ULX, and custom DarkRP jobs and entities are installed. Edit server.cfg for the hostname, password and other settings.

04

Hardware and location

Premium Ryzen 7950X hardware has the single-core speed that busy Garry's Mod servers need. Budget Xeon suits a small server for friends. Choose Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, or Newcastle for the UK and Europe.

05

Admins and joining

Garry's Mod has no full admin system built in, so most servers add one such as ULX with ULib, or SAM. Install it as an addon, then make yourself superadmin from the console in the game panel. Players can join through the server browser or by connecting to your address.

2 GB for a small Sandbox or TTT server, 4 GB for most servers with addons, and 8 to 12 GB for busy DarkRP servers with lots of content.

Any of them. Sandbox and TTT come with the game, and DarkRP, Prop Hunt, Murder and others install as addons.

Set your Workshop collection ID in the startup settings. The server downloads the collection, and players get it when they join.

Yes. Upload them into garrysmod/addons with the file manager or SFTP and restart the server.

Budget runs on Intel Xeon servers with DDR4 memory and SSD storage, and is great value for smaller servers and friends. Premium runs on AMD Ryzen 7950X servers with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage: much faster per core, which busy or heavily modded servers notice most.

Premium servers are set up automatically: once your payment goes through, your server is created and you can log in to the game panel straight away. Budget hardware and our Dallas location are on pre-order, so those servers are set up as soon as they launch.

Pick the one closest to most of your players: Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, Newcastle for the UK and Europe. Distance adds lag that no amount of hardware can remove.
