Hosting Counter-Strike

These are Counter-Strike 2 servers. CS2 is light on memory: 2 GB runs a simple 5v5, and the builder suggests 4 GB, which leaves room for plugins and a rotation of Workshop maps. Community servers with lots of plugins and bigger player counts can go up to 8 GB.

What matters more is clock speed and distance. A fast CPU keeps the server steady at full tick, and being close to your players keeps peeker's advantage fair. Premium Ryzen 7950X hardware is the pick for competitive play.

01

Game modes and settings

Choose your mode with game_type and game_mode in your startup settings: competitive, wingman, casual, deathmatch, arms race and more. Fine-tune everything else in cfg files such as server.cfg, from round times and overtime to practice settings. You can run commands live from the console in the game panel.

02

Plugins

CS2 plugins run on Metamod:Source and CounterStrikeSharp. Upload them into your server's files with the file manager or SFTP and restart. That opens up retakes, executes, admin tools, practice modes and match plugins for scrims.

03

Workshop maps

Load any map from the Steam Workshop by its ID with host_workshop_map, or set up a collection to rotate through. Workshop maps download to the server when they're first loaded.

04

Listing and storage

To list your server publicly, add a Game Server Login Token from Steam's game server account page. The CS2 server files take up a good part of the 50 GB that comes with every server, so add extra storage if you plan to keep lots of Workshop maps or demos.

05

Getting started

Once your server is set up, add your Login Token, set a hostname and an RCON password in server.cfg, and restart. Players can find you in the community server browser or type connect followed by your address in the console. For private scrims, set sv_password so only your team gets in.

Yes, to list the server publicly. Create one on Steam's game server account page for app 730 and add it to your startup settings.

Yes. Load a map with host_workshop_map and its Workshop ID, or host a Workshop collection.

Budget runs on Intel Xeon servers with DDR4 memory and SSD storage, and is great value for smaller servers and friends. Premium runs on AMD Ryzen 7950X servers with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage: much faster per core, which busy or heavily modded servers notice most.

Premium servers are set up automatically: once your payment goes through, your server is created and you can log in to the game panel straight away. Budget hardware and our Dallas location are on pre-order, so those servers are set up as soon as they launch.

Pick the one closest to most of your players: Salt Lake City or Dallas for North America, Newcastle for the UK and Europe. Distance adds lag that no amount of hardware can remove.
