cPanel vs DirectAdmin: which should you choose?

When you sign up for web hosting, you will often be asked to choose a control panel. The two most common are cPanel and DirectAdmin. Both let you manage websites, email, domains and databases without touching the command line, and for most everyday tasks they do the same job. The differences are in how they look, how they feel and what sits around the edges. This guide walks you through them so you can pick the one that suits you.

What a control panel does

A control panel is the dashboard for your hosting account. Instead of logging in to the server and editing configuration files, you click through a web interface to do things like:

• Upload and manage your website files.
• Create email accounts and forwarders on your domain.
• Add domains and subdomains.
• Create MySQL databases and manage them with phpMyAdmin.
• Install SSL certificates so your site loads over HTTPS.
• Edit DNS records.
• Take and restore backups.

cPanel in brief

cPanel is the best-known hosting control panel in the world, and it has been around for a long time. If you have used web hosting before, there is a good chance you have used cPanel.

DirectAdmin in brief

DirectAdmin has also been around for many years, and it has a reputation for being fast and lightweight. It has become more popular as hosts look for alternatives to cPanel.

• Clean and uncluttered. The interface focuses on the things you use most and stays out of your way.
• Quick. Pages tend to load fast, and the panel itself uses few server resources.
• Easy to learn. There is less to take in, so newcomers often find their feet quickly.
• Smaller ecosystem. There are fewer third-party tutorials and add-ons than for cPanel, although everything most sites need is built in.

DirectAdmin's current interface uses a sidebar and a simpler dashboard, with the most common tasks close at hand. Menus are shorter, and there are fewer options to scroll past. Some people love how tidy it is, while others miss the at-a-glance view of every tool that cPanel gives.

Email and webmail

Both panels make it easy to create mailboxes on your own domain, set up forwarders and autoresponders, and manage spam filtering. Both also give you webmail, so you can read and send email in your browser as well as in apps like Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird. For most people, email works the same whichever panel you choose.

Not really. The control panel is the tool you use to manage your hosting, not the thing that serves your website to visitors. Your site's speed comes from the server hardware, the web server software, caching and how well your site is built. DirectAdmin's lighter footprint means the panel itself feels quicker to use, but your visitors will not notice which one you picked.

What about cost?

Both panels are commercial software, and hosts pay a licence for each. cPanel changed its pricing in 2019 to charge hosts per account, which pushed up costs for many providers, and it is one reason some hosts started offering DirectAdmin as well or instead.
